Now that I reviewed the sights, let's talk about the guide. I am absolutely terrible at names and I can't remember our guide's name (I think it started with an A? This is my fault, I was there almost 5 months now) and he was fantastic. He clearly has a love for the country, the sights and the history. He also is patient. I was with my friend who was, let's say a handful, and that is putting it lightly. He went out of his way on the way back to ease the tension between us with a detour through Austria and it was calming and just what I needed. I also want to point out, this was definitely off the clock as my friend had made us leave Linderhoff about an hour late. He deserves all the credit in the world for not only dealing with my friend, but making the day a success. And when you are traveling, that's what we all want in a day.
(And to my guide that day - if you ever read this, thank you. THANK YOU. I can't say that enough. THANK YOU.
We have to rate this out of 5 stars, but I would give them 10 if I could. They are the best there is.
I have traveled a lot of places, taken a lot of day tours, so I don't say this lightly - these guys are one of the best I've experienced. If you are staying in Munich, take the train to Fussen, and start the tour at 9am there. They handle everything, and get you to the best vantage points of Neuschwanstein before the hoardes of tourists. I opted to also do the Linderhoff afternoon portion and it boggles my mind that more people don't go here. This was the palace that King Ludwig II spent a lot of his time, and its honestly, breathless. Take time to see the grotto, it's worth it. Don't just book the morning tour, book the day. You won't regret it.
