Worst, I could hear the staff speaking intermittently throughout my massage, including negotiating with current and potential customers at the front. Lots of discussions about how tight some other dude's muscles were, haggling over prices, encouragement to buy more expensive services, exhortations to return, chats in Thai among the staff... and so on. As I paid, I kindly mentioned to the hostess that I had noticed quite a bit of noise and that I recognized that most of it was not the establishment's fault. She smiled and said she knew, and others had mentioned it, and that it was not their fault. Hmm.
Was disappointed with my experience here. The studio is located in a nice part of Munich, well appointed, but very small. My main complaint was the ambient noise, which I describe in detail below.
I received two treatments at Sumitra spa on my European Spa tour trip with a group of American Massage therapists. My favorite was the Thai oil Massage (60 min.) I went early in the day on a weekday when it was quieter. I brought a colleague back on the Saturday of our trip and she got a facial which she said was amazing and very unique compared to American facials. We both got foot massages too. The spa was busy on Saturday. We could both get in right away, but it was louder. I highly recommend. The massage therapists are professionals with traditional training from Thailand. They serve the best tea I’ve ever had too!
I paid an additional fee for a "foot massage" and there was little to none of this included in my service. There was an extremely brief (less than 60 seconds) foot soak in sudsy water with rose petals, after which my feet were dried and I was led to a dual occupancy room and instructed to put on a pair of (enormous, like size 50) pants that resembled hospital scrubs. A small changing area, basket and hangers were supplied.
Another man was receiving a massage in the room, and although I'd consider them natural in this context, I didn't particularly care to listen to his grunting noises. Luckily his time was up shortly after my massage started, but the noises grew worse from there. Owing to the open ceilings, the sounds from the street came all the way back to my room (which was the farthest from the storefront). These included horns, sirens, and shouts (like really, really aggressive drunken shouts). There were also sounds from what sounded like possibly a restaurant or maybe a family's home -- there were several loud noises from a young child, and what sounded like a cart or mop bucket.
In summary: massage 4 stars, environment 2 stars. The ambiance here was anything but relaxing. Although my muscles felt somewhat better when I left, my mind was never able to get away from the outside world -- perhaps the thing I appreciate most about a good massage.
My suggestion to the management: close the ceilings to the massage rooms and invest in sound-dampening items like curtains or acoustic foam.
I've had some experience with authentic Thai massage and felt that the massage I had was authentic and very good, not great. I had to briefly stop my masseuse when she was flexing my (post-surgical) knee in a way that was painful. I knew in advance that there would be significant stretching involved, and while I absolutely despise completing written questionnaires and liability releases before a massage, a brief "Any injuries or limitations?" is always appreciated -- did not happen here.
